GATE Introduction



The full-form of GATE Exam is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination. This exam is primarily conduct to examine the understanding level of the candidate in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering / Technology / Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science.



Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination is conducted every year. This exam is mainly for getting admission into higher all India ranking colleges of engineering and technology like IISc, IITs, NITs. GATE Score also opens gates for jobs opportunities in several Public Sector Unit and research organizations. (PSU through GATE)



GATE is organised by any of these 8 Institutes – Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and 7 Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee). (GATE Organised Institute Yearwise List)



GATE Key Facts



(1) GATE exam conduct in 25 Subjects.

(2) Applicant can appear only in any One Paper.

(3) GATE exam is an Online Computer-Based Test.

(4) GATE application process is completely Online.

(5) Electronics devices along with Physical Calculator are Not Allowed in the examination hall.

(6) Students will be provided with Online Virtual Calculator on the computer screen for calculation purpose during GATE exam.

(7) GATE Score Card is valid for Three Years from the date of result announcement.

(8) There is No Age, Attempt or Percentage Limit to appear in GATE Exam.


GATE Eligibility Criteria


B.E. / B.Tech. / B. Pharm. : Applicants should have already completed or in the final year of their Bachelor degrees (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc./Diploma in Engineering /Technology) (GATE Eligibility Criteria)



GATE Papers


It is already mentioned that there are total 25 gate papers out of which applicants can only appear in one paper. An applicant is free to appear in any paper of his/her choice. However, he/she are advised to choose paper carefully according to employment opportunities and institutes admission criteria. After submission of GATE Application, a candidate will not be allowed to change paper. (GATE Papers)



GATE Examination Cities


GATE Committee has divided India into 8 Zone according to the location of 8 IITs. Cities near to these zones are allotted to that IIT for easing administrative work. Applicants are allowed to choose THREE Examination Centers. The first and Second choice should be from the same zone. However, the third option can be from any zone. (GATE Examination Cities)



GATE Application Fee


Women Candidates : Rs. 750/- SC/ST/PWD Candidates : Rs. 750/- All Other Candidates : Rs. 1500/- GATE International Candidates : US Dollars 50



GATE Question Paper Pattern


In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE, the Engineering Mathematics will carry around 15% of the total marks, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining around 70% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.



In the papers bearing the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST and XL, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 85% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper. (GATE  Question Paper)



GATE Question Types


In GATE Examination there is two type of questions:


(1) Multiple Choice Questions: MCQ consist of 4 options out of which candidates have to select only one answer. There is Negative marking for MCQ. In case of the wrong answer, for 1 marks question, there is 0.33 marks deduction and for 2 marks question, there is 0.66 mark deduction.

(2) Numerical Answer Type: NAT type question does not show option. The candidate has to fill signed real number with the help of virtual numeric keypad provided on the computer screen. There is NO Negative Marking for NAT.


GATE Exam Syllabus


GATE examination is conducted every year for 24 branches. Branches are AE, AG, AR, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, CY, EC, EE, EY, GG, IN, MA, ME, MN, MT, PH, PI,PE, ST, TF, XE, XL. (GATE Syllabus)
